The tremor in Amelia’s hand nearly caused her to spill her tea. She sat at her kitchen table, staring out the window at the scaffolding that was climbing the side of the house next door. It had only been two days since the renovation started, but it felt like a lifetime. Her normally neat house felt suffocating.

She found herself checking the clock every few minutes, counting down the seconds until the crew took their lunch break. The incessant banging and drilling was like a relentless tickle, a constant irritation that wouldn’t go away. She kept making lists and re-writing them, unable to focus on anything. Every creak of her own house had her jumping, certain some aspect of the renovation was to blame.
